Bofo Bautista to Chivas USA – What is he worth?
By: Alex | April 15th, 2008Some rumors make sense. Chivas USA need a playmaker and a star to attract fans. Bofo Bautista is out of contract at the end of the Clausura. I didn’t start this rumor, but I have been watching it closely.
The idea of Bofo playing for Chivas USA is mind bottling. You know… when you thoughts are so crazy it’s like your mind is trapped in a bottle. The striker/attacking midfielder would add a dimension to the game and the squad unseen in MLS. He would put people in stands and add to an already strong team.
The only issue is trading for a Designated Player spot. Who (or what) would Chivas USA have to give up for a DP spot? Who would you give up? Galindo? Razov? Wicky?

This is a tough one….. I would give any team a striker, their choice between Razov, Esky and Harris plus a ton of our extra cap room we will get for Guzan. I would not trade Galindo…. unless his contract ends soon and he decides to go somewhere else anyways.

I think Galindo will want to go to Seattle. But he may try to get left unprotected in the Expansion Draft?
Razov is too old to be worth anything like this. I know its a terrible thing to say but its true. If Razov can make it through this season without a hu inugejury, then I say he’s worth it (shoot, San Jose really really needs this guy whether he can or cannot)
By mid-season, Sacha will be MVP material. He would be the likely trade I think. I can’t remember if this is Sacha’s third or fourth year but I won’t be surprised if he starts fielding offers from teams in Eurpoe (if not already). Although, I get the sense the guy would not be happy to leave Los Angeles.

What is the current salary cap per player before they become a DP?
Is it $400,000 a year?
Why can’t Frazee or Comex (or McDonalds for that matter!!!) provide Bofo with enough sponsorship money (for appearing in X amount of Adverts during his playing career for Chivas USA) that would offset him earning only $400,000 a year?
Isn’t that what they did to attract Beckham???If I was Bofo, and I knew I could re-invent my playing career in MLS with Chivas USA, and I was going to get the money I deserved in one form or another, I would do it!!
Isn’t that how the Chicago Bulls were able to amass such a great team, because Jordan was playing for peanuts b/c his NIKE & Gatoraide contracts were SO HUGE?
I think Frazee and Comex (two brands that are targeting the hispanic market in the USA) would pay big bucks to have BOFO (A very popular player in FMF) to appear alongside their products.
Or is that breaking some MLS rule that I don’t know about? (Delete all sarcasm from this comment, b/c I am seriously asking if there is a rule in effect that prohibits this.)

I think the MLS is all about pulling players of Bofo’s caliber and marketing potential. If he even thinks about coming hear, I can see Garber and Co. helping make this move happen. It’s just good business sense. Can you imagine how many Bofo jerseys would sell. He can get a cut of that, too.
Also, the league would likely allow him to have “BOFO” and #100 just to insure the sales projections.
I only worry about how he’d get a long with Preki and vice versa.

if it aint broken, dont try to fix it.
in other words, lets not ruin the chemistry that we have for yet another forward.
but if it were a creative mid like zidane, by all means, ruin the chemistry.
and just for the record, wicky stays!

If Bofo comes his impact could be disastrous, creating a second LA galaxy at the HDC…Media circus, lack of chemistry and a totally inaccessible team. I would really prefer to wait it out and play Wicky more. Two games and two assists, more to come!
If we get anyone this summer it should be someone to add depth in the right mid!

Gly,
can I have some of that mezcal you are drinking? Getting Bofo will generate some interest, but it won’t be anywhere close to what Beckham or Blance got. Relax with the whole “media circus” spook stories. I do agree with you that Wicky is going to be a great member of the team once he is healthy.
As for how will Bofo and Preki get along? Well, let’s ask Chepo De La Torre and Amado Guevara does questions.

It’s a possibility. By “generate interest”, do you mean off the pitch media success? If so, Bofo guarantees it, on the pitch it’s a whole other story. I don’t doubt his abilities. It’s just something to think about since we had a great team chemistry last year and we’re bound to have something of the same this year and we’re deep in midfield.
The summer transfer is a few months away, enough time to gauge the squad.

From the marketing aspect, Bofo is the shot in the arm that we need, without a doubt. I totally agree with the jersey sales and set up that was talked about above. I’d buy one!
From the field perspective… it raises a good question.
Will he fit in with the team chemistry? He’s pretty creative.Do we move into a 4-3-3 with Bofo as a withdrawn striker to play the ball wide to the other forwards? Does he take LM when Mendoza leaves, but giving him the freedom to rove the middle (meaning Nagamura or Marsch’s replacement…Wicky>…needs to cover defensive duties when he pushes forward?
Do we play a 4-4-2,with a diamond midfield (Bofo in offensive position and either Nagamura/Marsch at defensive mid)?
And more importantly…. Will Bofo buy into the TEAM 1st mentality of Chivas USA? Will he trek back on Defense?
I think it’s a risk worth taking. I think Bofo brings in more fans. I don’t think he will be a Beckham (with the media circus) but maybe the same effect as Blanco has for away games??
Bye the bye, is it me, or does the fact that all of their names beginning with a “B” freak anyone else out?

The question about risk depends on what you give up. If the team had to give up Galindo to get a DP, is it worth it? I would guess not. However, how else do we get a DP?

What makes him a DP? – Is it salary? Then pay him under the salary cap of $400,000 and get adverts to make up the rest of what he’s worth.
Does anyone know how much he gets paid now? He got $800,000 to play with Chivas Guad…
So, is it against league rules for Chivas USA to offer him $400,000 a year, and then their sponsors offer him a advertisement deal of $400,000 a year if he plays in MLS?
If the answer is yes… then I guess we are going to have to wait for another 4+ years for the Guevarra debockle to work itself out (of for MLS to allow another DP slot like they gave the Galaxy…..) because I wouldn’t give up anyone. They all work so well together as a team, that I don’t know if I would want to give that up.
If the answer is no, then someone should be talking to Comex ($130,000), Chivas Regal ($130,000), Frazee Paint ($130,000), etc. etc.
