A Little Fuego in the HDC

By: Alex | December 26th, 2007

Chivas USA are holding their annual try-outs at the HDC January 21. However, a few stand outs are getting an early start.

Orlando Ramirez, Amaury Nunes and Jesus Santiago from the Fresno Fuego are in Los Angeles competing for a spot. Ramirez and Nunes(the Brazilian Trio) were invited to try out after Chivas USA lost to the Fresno Fuego 3-1 in a friendly last month.

Two of the three that were invited to try out will make it this year. Campos would like to retain his amateur status and did not come down. The trio also received interest from San Jose.

    Depth…we need Depth…
Could these guys provide it. Maybe with a little spark?
We have a good starting 11 and depth in the defense, but we need a little offensive depth.
Let’s go Chivas. Make these guys understand that they will be on a team that has made the playoffs twice, that they will be on a team that was 2nd in the overall standings and 1st in the west, that they will be on a good team that is loved and adored by their fans. Let’s go Chivas!!!

Basically, these players are unheralded and underrated. They are top form for PDL. At the MLS level, they’ll need time to pick the level of play. Also, the have to fit into Preki’s scheme.
Chivas USA would be lucky if any of these players make it. Milton Blanco was the best player on this team and played sparingly in the 2005 season for Chivas USA. To say he was a disapointment would be an understatement.
Being born and raised in Fresno AND a Chivas USA fan, I would love nothing more than to see all these guys make it.
As for Campos, he’s smart to play another season and graduate, if soccer is not in his future. Then again it will be criminal if he hurts himself and ruins his career opportunities.

I can understand what you are saying about Campos, but I don’t know if I agree. He has an opportunity to play professional soccer in lieu of his 4th year of college. Campos can take a leave of absence from studying (every university has paperwork to grant this) and take a contract to play. He can room with 2-3 other players to keep his cost of living down, and save up his cash for college. If he bombs out in the league, then he can take his savings and return to college. The only thing he wont be able to do is play his fourth year of college ball. But who cares?!? He will get a chance to play professional soccer.

Like I said, that would be the least that I would do. If he is smart, he works into his contract some sort of tax deferment plan that allows him to place the bulk of his money for college. Even better, put into the terms of his contract that Chivas pays for his college expenses when they release him from his contract.

I know that MLS contracts are not the highest payed in the world, but in his situation, it isn’t as bad as it sounds. When I was in the Navy, I has room and board, but I only made like $13,000 a year. If you live smart, you really don’t need much. And like I said, if he lives with 3 roommates, and gets a used car, he could totally save enough money for his last year at college.

He’s already in college. Once you are in, it isn’t that hard to get back in - especially if he takes a leave of absence.

    Take a chance!

PK, I’m with you. Campos should go pro now. He’s no spring-chicken (25 or 26, I think). College will be there, this opportunity…who knows. Also, Campos is not going to be playing for a developmental player contract. He’ll likely be making between 35K and 40K if he turns pro.

    Thanks Jaime,
Keep up the good work on your blog… I read it every day!

To comment on the point you are making on his salary… That is even more of a reason to go pro. He could live on his own and save up enough money for tuition.

Put a clause in his contract that allows him to opt out of a 2-3 year contract to finish college, but that also retains his rights (without continuing his pay) if he chooses to opt out early, for the remainder of the contract.

Maybe I should have been a sports agent instead of a history teacher, eh?

Put me in contact with this guy… I’ll talk him into it.
(And if he’s playing coy, b/c he wants to play with the BRIT, then I will flush him out, and we can move on!)

    Go Chivas!!!

    PK…it’s EastLAChiva not EastLAChivas.

About Campos, there’s nothing wrong with him wanting to graduate if that’s the biggest priority for him. I think he has the talent and skill, just curious about just desire to play right now. I think the longer he holds out, the bigger the price tag. I know from a credible source that RSL and San Jose have offered him a contract. He can make a little more than the 35-40k if a bidding war starts. This would all but gaurantee that Chivas USA will not pay more than that and thus will not sign him. Can you say Atiba?

    ELAC,
I’m going to give you a pass on the name thing because talking about Campos is what’s important here.

If this guy is that good in the UDL, and can translate those skills at MLS level, then why not sign a 1 year contract with Chivas? If he scores 10+ goals in the season, than he can get a better contract from Chivas.

If he’s a bust, than he can return to his UDL team and continue playing at that level. Staying at UDL doesn’t increase his playing skills.

ELAC… we can push all of these statements to the side and ask you one question -

Do you want CD Chivas USA to get players that can do the job and win championships OR are you Campos’s agent?

    I know my answer…
    Go Chivas!!!

    ELAC….like East Los Angeles College?

    Pocketking…..screw you and your pass.

Campos is a talented player, but at the PDL and NAIA level. The level of the MLS is higher, obviously. He may be a bust or he way be the next Galindo. It’s a gamble. I hope he plays for Chivas USA, but I doubt it. He may want too much than what the FO is wlling to pay. This team has no money to pay for someone unproven in the MLS or USL. Its not really about potential, its about dollars and sense.

Something I’m not sure you understand,PocketKing.

ELAC (EastLAChiva…its the initials you capitalized, not me… besides, what’s wrong with ELAC?)

No need to get upset… I’m not getting upset that you forgot the “s” in PocketKings. We’re all typing as fast as we can to explain our point of view. Even you abbreviated PocketKings to PK… so why are you getting angry?

I can see you are as passionate about this club as I am. Our only point of contention is that you believe that it is in Campos’s best interest to complete his 4th year of college.

On the Fuego website, it says Campos joined Fresno after completing his junior year at Oklahoma Baptist University in 2005. So Campos has been playing for Fresno for the last two years?

Even if it was for 1 year, why not make the move to MLS? How is being away from Oklahoma Baptist University for 1 more year going to hurt his finishing his Bachelors degree? And if he is successful in MLS - good for him and good for US! And if he doesn’t make it in MLS - well, at least he knows and he can decide whether or not to return to the PDL or continue his education.

Bear in mind that you are talking to a guy that went to 2 years to University, spent 6 years in the military, and then returned to University to finish BA in history - spent a year getting a teaching credential - and then another 18 months for a MS in Education. So if an “idoit” like me can do it, then why can’t Campos.

All I want is some depth in the Striker position, so we don’t fizzle out at the end of the season, again. I hope he isn’t a bust and that he is the next Galindo (your words).

The clubs total budget was around $1.7 million (rough estimates from players union information) which was at least 200-300 grand below the average. I think we can afford to pay Campos $40G for a 1 year experiment, even after all our starters got a pay raise.

The selling point should be our style of play, as compared to RSL or the unknown Frank Yallop’s SJ team. The club plays one touch futbol, with an emphasis on “the beautiful game.” Can anyone say that about RLS or SJ (or any other team in MLS besides DC United)?

All jokes and disrespectful comebacks aside, can you find any fault in what I said?

Maybe I misinterpreted your tone when talking about Campos’s opportunity to earn a couple of extra bucks if a bidding war started for his services.

I’m willing to admit to that.

    Go Chivas!
