Can Chivas USA get a “David Beckham”?

By: Alex | September 18th, 2007

If you could pick any one in the world right now to play for Chivas USA, who would it be? There has been a lot of talk about adding a high profile player to the team next year. This player could raise the profile of the club and bring fans to the games.

I know, Chivas USA gave up their DP slot for 5 years. I’m guessing MLS is going to somehow allow the Galaxy to have both their DP’s next year, and each team will be allowed to have two of them. Even if that does not happen, we can always take advantage of our partnership with CD Guadalajara and they can “loan” a player to us under the cap.

Now that technicalities are out of the way, I’m going to throw a couple of names around that may be a good fit in the team.

Omar Bravo

Omar Bravo

Well known in Mexico, 28 years of age, proven goal scorer. What else is there to say. Omar has stressed that he would like to go over seas, but i think he is getting a little old, especially for his playing style.

Bofo Bautista

Bautista

Can score goals, but can also create opportunities. He is best known for getting in the way of defence and putting the ball in the box. 28 years old with a lot of skill. A little flash and flare.

Ronaldo

Ronaldo

No, not Christiano. Ronaldo may come towards MLS, but he is getting a little old. 31 or 32. I’m sure he can do the job for a year or two. Not four or five. It will accomplish the goal of putting people in seats.

Zidane

Zidane

Please put this rumor to rest.

Riquelme

Riquelme

For those of you asking “Where did he go?” he is still at Villareal still not playing. One of the greatest midfielders in the world. A little tempremental. I love the football he plays, and the seats he will sell. He has 4 or 5 years to offer to the team. I fear what a player like this could do to the balance of the team.

Who would have an impact like Mr. Beckham? Please give your opinion. Let me know who belongs on the Chivas USA.

riquelme is the best fit…you don’t need much pace in the mls. he can sit back and deliver the ball to wingers making runs on forwards who can take a page out of the pippo inzaghi book. he’d kill it in the mls.

I have to agree about Zazu. He’s a great player, but beyond hustling around the mid-field. Same with Ronaldo.

BOFO isn’t going to happen Chivas de G said that he would never suit up in the Rojiblanco (Red & white) again. Besides, we can’t get him on “loan” due to his departure from Chivas de G.

Bravo would help with ticket sales, just like “Paco” Palencia did in season #2. But I think I would like Riquelme out of all of the choices. We should play the “lots of playing time” card, and maybe point out some of his countrymen having immediate success in MLS (like the pair in Real SL).

Riquelme was born a boca fan and wants to retire a boca player. he’s even said he’s gonna be a little punk this year and lower his value so that boca can finally afford him (villarreal’s selling high). he is the elite version of amado guevara and has had issues with both barca and villarreal. but sure, he’d bring in TOOOOOOONS of argentines.

zizou is the greatest player of all time. enough said.

we dont want bofo, he’s very half-assed.

    ronaldo’s been doping.

Now that I think about it…. shouldn’t we also be looking for a defender to replace Claudio Suarez? Shavar Thomas is doing a fantastic job as his partner. The other guys are doing well being subbed in, or catching a start next to Thomas while Claudio recuperates. But do we have the depth in Central Defense that can be consistent over the course of next season? Any thoughts? Did our 2nd string central defenders grow enough this year to start, or do we need use a DP slot to replace Claudio?

I can’t stop thinking that bringing on a high-profile striker depends on whether Razov throws a s–t-fit over the idea (and don’t get me wrong here – Razov up top is so important to these great Chivas forward pairings).

I agree that we may need some additional depth in the back. However, I don’t think that we should use are DP slot in the defense. As great as Suarez has been the past few years, he has done little for attendence. A striker or midfielder may grab more attention.

I don’t know if Chivas USA will be the next team to get a “David Beckham”, but there will definitely be more big name players coming in the next couple of years. Hopefully they will be players in their prime and not falling stars.

Speaking of Becks, I found this funny vid of him teaching Reggie Bush to take free kicks. Maybe Bush is the next big star to make it to the MLS… lol

I was hoping that FC Dallas would give up their Canadian International defender (I can’t remember his name?) when they signed Denilson.
