Chivas USA draw Against FC Dallas

Chivas USA draw 1-1 against FC Dallas. Brief review here.

First game of the season, it was great to see the team come together. Several players missed preseason and still have a ways to go until they are healthy. That was apparent in a couple of our stars (or future stars). However, the team gave us a glimpse of what is to come.

One promising statistic was that the Chivas USA had 22 shots on goal compared to Dallas’ 8. With that many shots, the team was unlucky to get a draw. However, there were some very positive things to take away from the match. Here’s a breakdown of each player.

Starting at the back.

Brad Guzan. Not much to say here. Brad was strong. The goal that was leaked in was unlucky and Toja was in the right place at the right time.

Jonathan Bornstein. Bornstein lacked pace, probably due to his surgery. He was burned twice by Cooper. Overall, good showing, especially considering a large portion of the match was played with three in the back.

Jim Curtain. Jim filled in for Claudio quite well. Great positioning, great man marking. His communication with Guzan needs a little work. Late in the game Guzan came out strong and put Curtain on the floor.

Shavar Thomas. Thomas was strong and intelligent all game. Committed a foul when he had to. Thomas played wide on the right when the team switched formation to a 3-5-2. He adapted well and limited shots on goal.

Lawson Vaughn. The Law played well for 60 minutes, but was sacrificed for the formation when Wicky came on the field.

Pancho Mendoza. Mendoza was strong defensively, and can play wide. His passes were lacking. Crosses did not connect.

Paulo Nagamura/Jesse Marsch. Nagamura partnered with Marsch as usual. The midfielders were strong and active. Ball distribution was a plus.

Raphael Wicky. Wicky debuted in MLS in the 71st. The change in formation put Dallas on their heals. Wicky played intelligently. I don’t think he is match fit yet. He read the game well and should have got the assist for Maykel’s goal.

Sacha Kljestan. Kljestan was up to the same old tricks. His passing was excellent. Placement and running off the ball was as expected. Finishing touch was lacking. He had two opportunities that should have found the back of the net.

Ante Razov/Atiba Harris. The striker pair played well off each other. Ante placed a few beautiful shots in the box and even hit the crossbar once. Atiba did well with placement.

Justin Braun. Not exactly sure why Braun played in this match. I’m guessing Alecko Eskandarian is not ready yet. The rookie did well for his first MLS start. Took a couple shots on goal.

As a whole, great job. One point on the road while the team tries to get healthy, great showing.

Website down…. until it comes back, here the text of the review.

The Chivas USA tied on the road against Dallas. The opening game pitted Chivas USA against Davino, Cooper and the rest of the hoops.

The game was a nail biter for Chivas USA fans. The first half was a fight. Juan Toja opened the score card this week in the 21st minute with a ball in the box from Abe Thompson.

In the second half, the Chivas USA took control of the match. Even though it was the first game of the season and many players were coming off of surgery, the team looked good overall. It was surprising to see the score end in a draw, as Chivas USA arguably deserved the win. The Red and White out shot the Hoops in the second half 18 to 2. Galindo was brought on in the 55th minute and created an offensive spark. He was not 100% fit and still terrorized the Dallas defense. A tactical move made by Preki in the 71st was made as Wicky made his MLS debut. He was another player coming off surgery and not at 100%, but made a definite impact on the match. Wicky entered for Lawson Vaughn as the team switched to a 3-5-2 formation. The midfield addition added to the potent attack. The team equalized in the 84th as Wicky tossed a ball up field to Galindo. Davino mishandled the lob and allowed Galindo to get a clean shot on goal.

A promising start for the Chivas USA as they get their first point of the season. The defense looked secure. Curtain filled in for the team captain, Suarez, and did well. Jonathan Bornstein lacked his usual speed, still recovering from his surgery. Midfield did great, and Wicky is proving to be an asset to the team. The strike force looked new, different and exciting. Rookie Justin Braun saw playing time and Harris was active up field. Both Razov and Galindo proved themselves to be irreplaceable.

Still haven’t had a chance to see this game (yet). Did Dallas play their rumored 3-5-3 or whatever it was supposed to be? Still shocked Chivas didn’t walk away with a win after the beating they gave the Dallas defense.

I have to disagree on a few of your coments. Atiba Harris in my opinion missed too many shots. There was one where he was squared up with the goalie that should have been converted into a goal but was blocked by a weak shot. Ante Razov miss too many opportunities as well . If not for Galindo we would be sitting here with no points. Panchito Mendoza at 85% still has the spark of the team. I would like to see him take more shots but over all I think he was one of the key factors. The team did show alot of promise of what is to come. I was very pleased with their play.
