Chivas USA to Acquire a Mexican National

By: Alex | November 6th, 2007

I know, it’s only been a few days, but I have been holding this rumor in for a week.

I’m not the type to throw pointless rumors around. You won’t hear about Zidane or Ronaldo from me. I try to be realistic. This is a team without a DP slot. We do have an advantage over other MLS teams, and it is our relationship with Guadalajara. Sometimes through tricky inquisitional dealings, we can get great players “loaned” to us under cap.

So Chivas USA is looking at possibly acquiring a big name Mexican star from the FMF, more specifically, CD Guadalajara. This makes a lot of sense for the club, specifically in the ticket sales department.

The rumor comes from Jaime Cardenas and basically goes like this. Guadalajara called up Chivas USA inquiring about Pancho. Chivas USA was willing to negotiate for a big Chivas star.

So I went through the list and here are my personal finalists of who I would like to play for the Red and White next year;

bravo_205.jpg
Omar Bravo

Pros: Lethal striker, star power, 7 years in a Chivas jersey, Golden boot winner for 2007 Clasura, Mexican National Team

Possibility: Bravo has been trying to go to Europe for a couple seasons (he was benched when he reacted to his clubs refusal from an offer from Racing Santandar). Slim chance that he would give that up.

bofo24qv.jpg
Bofo Bautista

Pros: Play maker, attacking midfielder personality, star power, Mexican National Team.

Possibility: Who knows. Not a current member of Chivas. Good in the sense that no one would be sacrificed from the Mother ship. Bad because he had a falling out with the club last year (actually the former coach).

ramoncito.jpg
Ramon Morales

Pros: Dead ball specialist! All around great midfielder, I call him the Becks of Mexico in style of play.

Possibility: Good. Meets all the goals Chivas USA has and then some. Would impact the team immediately and can provide the shots on goal desperately needed. Can Chivas USA afford him without a Designated Player slot?

venado_vt.jpg
Alberto Medina

Pros: El Venado is one of my personal favorites. Striker or attacking mid, would add the needed depth on the front line, young, on the Mexican National Team

Possibility: Maybe… Medina like Bravo, plays part of an important duo up top. With the loss of Bofo, these two have teamed up to make a lethal duo. If either of these players leave, they will have to be replaced. I’m not sure Guadalajara is ready to give them up.

sanchez.jpg
Oswaldo Sanchez

Pros: Can stop balls in the box

Possibility: Slim, too expensive for a goal keeper in MLS. History has shown in Chivas USA that defensive Mexican stars do not sell tickets, Preki wouldn’t deal with his attitude.

Here are my favorites. Who are yours? According to Cardenas, Chivas USA is actually inquiring about Ramoncito. It is totally up to Morales and there is no word on what he wants. I think any one of these players would benefit the club on and off the pitch.

Morales would seem to make the most sense, if he wants the new challenge. Bofo would be a good second choice. I don’t see Bravo or Medina coming here any time soon, and Oswaldo would just be a bad choice.

I read somewhere (don’t remember the link offhand) that an offer was made to Morales already and he’s mulling it over right now. There was an allusion made somewhere about Chivas suddenly having more room in the salary cap which can’t honesly be because of Mendoza’s salary – um… Razov is the highest paid Chivas player the last time I checked. God, I hate waiting. Also I don’t think Suarez actually agreed to remain at Chivas but he did receive an offer to stay. This offseason is going to give me an ulcer.

Ok, one last comment before I take a Chivas break –

Having Morales would be freakin’ awesome cause I can’t think of any reasons why his experience and skills would NOT improve Kljestan’s game. And I really want to see Kljestan become a regular Nats callup.

I don’t think Oswaldo would be a very good choice. For one, Chivas already have a pretty good keeper and for another, Sanchez is not remembered fondly in the U.S. for his attempt to trip a U.S. player (was it Donovan?) during the teams’ friendly at Phoenix last winter…

I was looking at another blogger, who linked the salaries from the MLS players organization and wanted to see what the total team salaries were.

With a little help from Excel, I came up with the following compensated team salaries (which I guess include bonuses earned through contract).

It was interesting to see LA teams are at the two extremes in both salary & results.

But what I am concerned about is if we do not start spending at the median level ($2.6 million), how long are we (CHIVAS USA) going to be successful with players moving/retiring???

I agree. I think the reason for that gap was the loss of Paco Placentia and Loco Garcia. I think they made up about 600K together. That is the money I hope we use on the Ramoncito or Bofo type player.

I have the actual player breakdown, if anyone is interested.
One guy we could afford is the colorado target forward. He would be great asset for Galindo to make his runs off of.
