Chivas USA will be Announcing a new Sponsor (And Its not Bimbo)
By: David | April 21st, 2007Well the wait seems to be over as Chivas USA will soon be announcing their new jersey sponsor. Though a lot of us had thought that Bimbo would have been the major sponsor, it would seem this is not the case, as the Chivas FO has opted for another major Mexican Corporation. So without further wait, I present to you the new sponsor:

Comex, also known as Comercial Mexicana de Pinturas, is going to be the Chivas USA jersey sponsor.
For over 50 years, Comex has been synonymous with “quality paints”. Today, the company has grown to be an international leader and one of North American’s largest paint manufacturers with almost 3,000 paint stores. Comex’s main manufacturing facility is the most automated and largest capacity plant in the North American coatings industry.
According to the Orange County Register, “The jersey would be unveiled at home, and the process of finalizing the contract is in the latter stages.” This was seemingly an interesting pick, however, this was more evident than we thought. If you had picked up one of the Chivas USA magnetic season schedules at the season opener, you would notice the Comex logo at the top. Furthermore, when I was talking with my ticket rep, he had stated that Chivas had already made a deal with a sponsor, but they would have to wait until the summer to finalize the deal.
So now that we know our sponsor we can start to analyze the impact it will have. I think this is a good move, as the name does not have a negative connotation. Understandably, Bimbo is one of the largest food corporations in the world; yet, the name is something that is perceived as negative in the United States; whereas, Comex can be placed on the front of the jersey without worry. The only problem I see with this selection is that Comex is not well known company among American sports fans and would not elicit much media coverage. But does this really matter, especially if Comex is willing to pay Chivas USA a substantial fee to be on the jersey?
More to come.

Cool. But why a Mexican sponsor? Is the company looking for expansion into the US market? Some sort of quasi tradition to only use Mexican sponsors? Friends of Vergara? The only downside I see to this is lack of future cross promotion with established sponsors in the US.. Ok, I really don’t care all that much. Game on!

Lame. “Comex” sounds like every single other chemical-related company in the universe.

I was thinking about this and in the end it really does not matter if it’s not marketable. Like I was saying in my post, the one thing that this provides Chivas with is a solid amount of money to help out with the roster and youth systems. Is that not the goal of the team? To create a strong team? I understand this not herbalife, but at the same time this is a massive corporation that has a huge amount of money to throw around.
What we must remember, is that Chivas is being overshadowed by its green/weak neighbors due to that overrated, old and worthless import. Just wait, Chivas is building a program that will last and still be strong in years to come. Do not forget, that Chivas has the most sponsors out of any other team and this deal with Comex will only bolster our future potential.

Good work tracking this information down. Comex was actually one of Guadalajara’s jersey sponsors a couple years ago. i know its not especially important, but im curious to see weather the logo will have a white block background, or if it will be just lettering.
hopefully comex gives us the money to paint the town red and white.

That would be a beautiful way to sell ourselves; we get enough paint to really make LA our city. Red and White everywhere!!! You never know, dreams do come true.

“Chivas is being overshadowed by its green/weak neighbors due to that overrated, old and worthless import.”
*Cough* *Cough* I think Bimbo would have been a MUCH better sponsor for the Naughty Girls…er…goats…er…whatever you are.
And Comex? Dude, OUR sponsor is a totally legitimate pyramid scheme selling scientifically questionable health elixirs. We have MUCH more credibility.

I do envy your credible pyramid scheme, I mean legitimate business operation selling diet elixirs.
It is interesting when you think about the type of sponsors the MLS is going after: Paint, Beer and Health companies. Maybe there is a connection we are missing. Maybe we are supposed to paint ourselves, drink until we think the MLS is strong and then diet so that we can cut back on all the exciting flavors of the MLS and day old hot dogs that are beings served. It’s a triad of fun!
