Go Figure, Refs are Biased; Or At Least that is What a new Study Is Saying
By: David | May 2nd, 2007According to the LA Times, refs in the NBA are racially biased. I know this is talking about the NBA; however, what is pertinent in one sport will effect all others and should raise a flag as to possible problems. As we have always thought, referees are not unbiased mediators, rather they are humans who make mistakes are tainted by personal problems.
The study by a University of Pennsylvania assistant professor and Cornell graduate student also found that black officials called fouls more frequently against white players than black players, but noted that that tendency was not as pronounced.
The study, conducted over 13 seasons through 2004, found that the racial makeup of a three-man officiating crew affected calls by up to 4.5%.
The previous quote shows that there are biases that exist within the referee community, albeit the NBA. However, this supports our belief that refs go into games with a bias that affects the way they rule.
As we all know, racism is rampant in soccer and I think it would be beneficial if the MLS started to look into the bias of their own refs. Whether it is racial or team bias, we have been complaining about the pathetic refs in this league and it is time something is done. These refs need to be controlled, as they are one of the reasons this league is in decline.
Should something be done about the refs? Are they really a problem?
