Gold Cup Could Spell Disaster For Chivas
By: David | May 29th, 2007Now that Bradley’s interim tag has been removed, it is time for the USMNT to begin its quest towards rebuilding. In doing so, Bradley will be looking to add a group of young players to the squad so as to tap into the growing American talent pool. Thus, Jonathan Bornstein and Brad Guzan has been added to the squad, which speaks volumes about their talent and future potential. I cannot say enough about what they have provided to Chivas, as they have both proven to be essential components of the team. And that exactly is the problem.
With Bornstein and Guzan being called up by Bradley, that means Chivas will be without two of their main players. If we thought not having Sacha Kljestan for two games was a problem, the lack of Bornstein and Guzan could be very troublesome for the team. For one thing, Chivas’ defense is already weak. And without Bornstein, it will be hard for the defense to function. Do not forget Zotinca is still out with a hamstring injury and we have yet to see Jorge Barrera play this season.
As for Guzan, we all know what happened last season when Preston Burpo was in the net. He started out strong and then collapsed, so how long can Burpo perform in the net before he fails? Further, how much mental damage has he retained from last seasons failures?
Thus, we are presented with some interesting problems that will really test Preki’s ability to coach. The only big option is to trade for another defensive player to help bolster the defense and hope that Burpo will be able to perform in the goal.
