I Wanna be like Mike… Munoz

By: Alex | March 5th, 2008

Mike Munoz is currently a student at UC Berkley. He is also a professional soccer player without a team.

A brief history on Mike Munoz.

Mike was selected by Chivas USA in 2005, their 1st season. He fit the bill as Chivas was promoting their “Goodbye soccer, hello futbol” campaign, and he was a promising Mexican-American midfielder.

Munoz had trouble in MLS due to injury and only played in one game for Chivas USA. Once the team dropped the “Mexican” player requirement after the first year experiment failed, Munoz was waived. He found a home in the bay area with USL 1 side California Victory. However, the team was disbanded once the San Jose Earthquakes were awarded an expansion. Munoz is now without a team, and away from his friends and family in LA. He most misses his girlfriend Patty Rodriguez.

Patty is a producer for KIIS FM on the morning show with Ryan Seacrest. She arranged an on air interview with Antonio Cue in September of last year. Patty implored the co-owner to give Mike another chance with the Red and White. Cue agreed on one condition; Patty had to dress up in a Chiva-girl uniform for one game. Patty met her part of the bargain and so did Cue, as Munoz was on trial this preseason.

Munoz was let go from the Chivas USA camp February 22, probably due to the midfield depth the team already has. He wrote about his experience here. It’s an interesting look in the life of an American soccer player.  The story makes you feel for the guy, and I wish him the best of luck with Yallop and the Quakes.

Tough break. I hope he makes it. Somewhere. He can always got to Mexico, claim to be born there, and he’ll be playing with Chivas de Guadalajara in no time.

    Call it the Padilla Plan.

What a great story and we really do need midfielders so maybe we’ve got a spot for Mike afterall (it doesn’t hurt he’s an ex-Victory guy).

On a separate note, I contacted the Union Ultras about joining them for the Aug game against the Gals. They’re super nice and cool about me buying tickets in their section. Yay!

If Munoz has talen, and all indications say that he does, he’ll wind up somewhere in the MLS. I hops its Chivas USA, but if not, Seattle or San Jose can be better options.
