Kljestan Suspended Two Games; The Refs are the Real Enemy Here
By: David | April 25th, 2007Well it would seem that the MLS Soccer Disciplinary Committee has suspended Sacha Kljestan for two games and fined him $1,000. This comes after a questionable foul that left an RSL player injured. For us this is horrible timing, as Chivas is going into a two game stretch against the gals and DC United.
The question is where does this leave us? Now that Kljestan has suspended we must fill his position. The only problem is that the remaining midfielders are all rookies or inexperienced players. What could possibly happen is that Bornstein might be moved to the midfield and Jorge Barrera could be started at defense. This is just a thought. A large majority of the impact could have been reduced if Guevara had been playing at full capacity. But with Guevara not healthy and continuing his lackluster play, this is going to be a struggle for Chivas.
Now I know discipline is needed, but Kljestan is not the only who is to blame. The refs on Saturday’s game were some of the most pathetic officials I have ever seen. Bad calls, missed calls and just plain stupidity that perpetuated the fans hatred of the MLS refs. If you ask me, the MLS refs have a serious beef with Chivas as they continually make biased calls, in an effort to swing the game. If this league really wants to change and make an impression on the fans, they are going to have to reprimand these refs so these ludicrous actions do not continue. It is no wonder why the MLS is the butt of all soccer jokes in the world.

Not sure if there is a bias but the quality of officiating in the league is lacking. I always am mildly amused by the MLS fines. $1k seems like peanuts but it is probably a lot to these players.

hopefully amado gets the chance to hold the reins w/ kljestan out. i put full blame on sacha for that uncalled for tackle on williams (who’s out 8 weeks now). the game was already in hand (4-0?) and with only a minute or so left.
the refs were awful that game, but i saw horrible calls for both sides.
RE: Kljestan’s absence, i like your suggestion of moving bornstein up (everyone knows he’s an attacker first) and putting barrera/hernandez down low. not a big fan of perez, who seems lost/apathetic at times. im excited to possibly see barrera for the very first time. (what ever happened to manuel sol being shipped out here?)
dont think we should change the formation just yet, its been working for us.

The refs did made some really bad calls on both sides, but it also was quite biased……as for Kljestan he should have known better, the guy is no longer a rookie and you pointed out we were up 4-0 already…..Manuel Sol is not coming….As for Bornstein the only problem with moving him up is how health is he? Coming back from a leg injury like he had, it takes awhile to heal and he has looked very tentative the last couple of games. It was only against RSL that we finally saw Bornstein attack the goal. Thus, Zotinca, Vaughn and Suarez have been doing a very good job in defending and moving Bornstein up would not have that much of an impact. Barrera has a Right hamstring strain, and Perez has a groin strain. So both of those defenders are going to be slow.
Another option: Leave Bornstein in defense and put Laurent Merlin in the Midfield; I think he plays both positions. Or we could try and use Cunliffe, even though he is a forward, maybe we could use his speed and aggression. But all of this depends on Guevara picking up his game, because there would not be so much of a problem if he were at top form. We are an attacking team, so we can afford to place a “forward” into the midfield position.
