Maykel Galindo- The Fastest Man in MLS

By: David | April 7th, 2007

We have finally made it. The Day is April 7th and my body is out of bed; though still trying to wake up, it feels good knowing that we can finally get this season underway. Only a few hours to go before the “historic” match-up between Chivas & TFC, pitting two teams that could be the most dominant in the MLS. Both sides are preparing themselves for the match and there is some excitement in the air.

To get the morning underway I will provide you with my pick as the potential star for this game (if in fact he starts). Maykel Galindo!!

Maykel Galindo

This, my friends is the future of soccer in America or at least for Chivas USA. A former Cuban National, Maykel defected from Cuba when on a trip with the National Team, in Seattle. He soon ended up on the Seattle Sounders, making a name for himself as one of the fastest players in the league. The Coach of the Sounders was quoted as saying, “We are a different team with Maykel in the lineup. We’re much better offensively now. We play a little bit more direct, because that suits Maykel’s style. Teams are wary of his potential to score and of his speed.” (seattletimes.nwsource.com)

Standing at 5′ 10″ and weighing 165 pounds, Maykel has proven himself as a versatile striker that has helped him progress in his soccer career. Just as was evidenced in his first game as a Sounder:

Galindo made his U.S. pro soccer debut with Sounders on Sept. 9, and made an immediate impact. He scored one goal in five matches. Defenses geared up for Galindo, who scored his lone goal in the playoffs — the 1-1 equalizer — as Seattle beat Montreal 2-1 in overtime shootout in the championship.

Though, Maykel has a lot to learn and will have to make the transition to the MLS, his speed will help him blossom. With the support of his teammates and a smooth transition, Maykel Galindo could become one of the most dangerous weapons on the Chivas USA team and the fastest Man in the MLS. A sight that will bring fear to all teams.

Wynne might have been the fastest player in the MLS, but a new champ has arrived.

I saw him play for the Seattle Sounders last year. He has some serious jets. I am happy he has moved on the Chivas. He gave my team nightmares.

Galindo showed some flashes of his speed on Saturday, it was more of him needing to settle into the MLS and the tentative nature that plagues “rookies.” He did burn a few TFC players and I am curious to see how he will do next week against Houston.
