Petition to Change the Name of Chivas USA
By: David | April 15th, 2007I have started a petition to change the name of Chivas USA, as we are seeing an evolution in the existence of the team. Numerous fans have made the mention that they do not feel a connection to the name Chivas USA and as such, we are starting a movement to get the owners and FO to realize this.
It is time that we see a change in the name so that we can create a new image and connection. The following is part of the petition:
At this point in time, Chivas USA has become a team representative of Los Angeles, as is evidenced by the diverse roster and fans in attendance. Yet, the current name does not represent this, and as a result, lacks in a connection to the surrounding community. Most successful international teams are named after their base city, not the country they are in. This is exemplified by Manchester United, Real Madrid, and FC Barcelona to name a few.
Thus, we are calling upon the owners and the front office of Chivas USA to realize that the team has evolved and that a more regional name involving the use of Los Angeles would be more advantageous to them for marketing, as well as to the local fans to put their arms around. We suggest the use of: CD Chivas LA, CD Los Angeles or Los Angeles FC, so as to embrace the true nature and existence of the team.
So if you agree and want to see something done, sign the petition so that we can have our voice heard. And remember to spread the word to all of your friends so that we can amass a collection of signatures in an effort to see change.

I like L.A. United personally. Since I am a Guadalajara fan everytime I hear ‘Chivas U.S.A.’ I say “oh you mean chivas #2?”. A picture of a lower lesser team appears in my head. I do hope they get their own identity. For the franchise’s sake.

So far we have gotten some attention, people really like the idea and as James has noted the team needs its own identity.
Let’s try to get the word out as much as we can so we can influence to FO to change.

David, how do you think this will go over at the legion 1908 forum? lol

I don’t care what you call yourselves. But you’re not freakin’ getting Zidane.

gly, dunno, but I’m planning on posting the link in their forum soon unless its already been done. I think if we can talk about it, through ideas around, we could make something work.
Laurie, one day you will realize the truth even if that means Zidane is wearing the red stripes.

Done. Good work. I really don’t care what they’re called, but when an Offside bro needs help… I’m so there.

Thanks Sam! It is slowly starting to pick up. But I need some ideas of how to increase this grassroots movement. Where can advertise and spread the word? If you know, please let me know or help out by placing a link there.
Together we can really make this into something.

David, I think that what you’re doing (spreading it via these wonderful interwebs) is the best way to make it visible to the greater world. I signed (I was #6!) and I agree that Chivas USA needs its own identity; despite the association with a wonderful club, that club is not in Los Angeles and the people of LA need to be able to identify with the team a little more closely.
I like FC Los Angeles (or Los Angeles FC), but there is already a team in LA with the city in its name. I disagree with calling things [blank] United or Real [blank] because that is just something stolen from England and Spain, respectively, especially the Real, which suggests the King sanctioned the club.
So I’d definitely go more for CD Chivas LA than anything else because it doesn’t remove the Chivas connection and it does remove the USA part. As you said, it’s an LA team, not a cross-country team.

I actually quite like there being a Chivas team since I’ve adopted Club America as my Mexican team following the Blanco signing, so it gives me another team to care about disliking.
On the other hand, I do see the need for a more local identity as you make clear, David. I’d side with Isaiah on something like CD Chivas LA, or LA Chivas.

Isaiah and Tom, any of those would work and I see what you are saying with the possibility of keeping Chivas in the name. But what we are all seeing is that we need to change the name to represent the region and the fans.
I am planning emailing this to some media tomorrow so as to continue gaining exposure.
