San Jose Draft

By: Alex | November 20th, 2007

Protected players were published, and you can find them here.

PocketKings had some great comments and questions about the draft. Check out what he had to say and leave your comments, questions and opinions!

I read in 100% soccer the list of players Chivas left unprotected. How many can we protect? Because I tried counting the starters and was a little confused with trade rumors as to what we are doing. Can you start a thread on this???

Here is the list of unprotected players:
Chivas USA left these players available today: temperamental and punted playmaker Amado Guevara (they still own the MLS rights), French striker Laurent Merlin, defenders Alex Zotinca, Jason Hernandez and Orlando Perez, Honduran Ramon Nunez, backup goalkeeper Preston Burpo, rookie English striker John Cunliffe, Anaheim’s Jorge Flores, David Arvizu, Anthony Hamilton, injured veteran defender Carlos Llamosa, Rodrigo Lopez, LMU’s Bobby Burling, Justin Myers, Desmond Brooks, Eder Robles and Erasmo Solorzano.

If this list is good, and Burpo is left unprotected, does that mean Guzan is not going to Arsenal, or are we putting all our trust in our 3rd string goalie (if we lose Burpo)?

Is Marsch staying? Is Suarez? Is Mendoza? Guzan?

If we lose these guys to other clubs and a quality reserve like Zotinca, Nunez, where are we going to be?

And are we that good in the striker position for next year that we risk losing Cunliff or Merlin? (Or do we not care because they are inconsistent in their finishing/playmaking?

The team was allowed to protect 11 players. Looks like Preki kept his starting 11.

I would say the “try-outs” at Chivas v Chivas may indicate the goats are prepared to lose Merlin or Cunliffe (although someone mentioned in Laurie’s blog Yallop passed on Merlin before) and its probably just a numbers thing that they got left unprotected.

I, as well, am confused over the Suarez situtation since his contract is up. Maybe I just need to do some counting here to see if he’s actually on the protected list? Bah! Math! I think we are hanging onto Mendoza because its not official he’s leaving and if he does go, we’ll be compensated (ok, not Ramoncito but someone else = yes). And Guzan? Its all so up in the air. Any thoughts on his performance in our last nats friendly? Is he ready to go to a place like Arsenal? The dude’s still hella young in goalkeeper years so he’s got a loooong career ahead of him.

Alex, that list is the same unprotected list that I posted. So what are the 11 they are protecting?
    1 Razov
    2 Galindo
    3 Shasha
    4 Marsch *Retirement?
    5 Nagamura
    6 Mendoza *loan contract up?
    7 Bornstein
    8 Suarez *contract up?
    9 Thomas
    10 Vaugn
    11 Guzan *Arsenal bound?

    Did I leave anyone out???

Is Pocketking’s list correct? And here is the rule that explains why Suarez is on the list:

If the Player’s contract expires at the end of 2007, he will still be considered part of the Team’s Senior Roster

I bet Chivas made him an offer but he hasn’t decided (since he also got two offers from Mexican teams).

I bet Marsch can still pull another year out of his ass. He made it through the season and the (short) postseason with minimal injuries. Also, he’s the de-facto captain if Suarez leaves so he can’t go until he’s properly groomed someone to replace him (have I mentioned how much I freakin loooove Jessie Marsch yet?).

I compared the list with the current roster. PK is correct.

I’m guessing the team is keeping those players (Guzan Pancho) for a few reasons. Either they are sticking around for another year, or the team will be compensated for a transfer.

Alex- Zotinca might not be the best Chivas pick, especially if Yallops willing to use a international spot on a project forward. Xavier might not come back and had a high number. Dorman will probably go to England. Casey blew his knee out in practice this week and is unlikely to play til next August. Houston has better options. The others are possible.

If Casey (COL) is being left unprotected, we should make him an offer, that guy is a great Center Forward that can trap and hold the ball and make the pass to a running Galindo.

Ooops. Didn’t know he just blew out his knee. That’s almost all of 2008…. Its a tough call, but he might be worth the rehab and return toward the end of ‘08 playoff run….

Especially since the HDC is hosting!!!!
