SELL OUT …. the stadium

By: Alex | September 13th, 2007

There is a lot of talk in the news about Chivas USA is having trouble attracting fans. Here are some honest suggestions (most of them) from a fan. Shawn, if you can hear me.

1. Win a championship;
2. One or two high profile players (can be Mexican, but not a requirement);
3. Announce the game in English before Spanish; (Us non Spanish speaking fans feel a little left out)
4. Promotions, give aways (keep on doing it)
5. Friendlys against CD Guadalajara (Talk about a Super Classico)
6. Beat the Galaxy (again)
7. Serve Carne Asada at the game; (delicious)
8. Serve Dos Equis at the game;
9. Make it to Superliga and win a few; (We need some street cred from the Mexican fans)
10. More head butts from Alex Zotinca (this one is a joke … kind of)

Any other suggestions from the MLS fans out there?

    Continue finding great draft picks and turning those guys into some of the best payers in the league.

    Get a stadium for Chivas. As long as you rent from the Galaxy, it seems as if you are not a settled, genuine, side. The sooner there is a stadium known as home for ChivasUSA, the better [no, it need not be in LA, although it is perhaps best if it is in southern California]

    1 New Stadium is a requirement!
    2 If you want to get the fat middle class white guys in the seat, you need to rebrand and get rid of “Chivas”. Changes to the player nationality policy is a step in the right direction, but not enough.
    3 If you don’t care about the WASP demographic, keep doing what your doing, and hope you can find way to get people to support the Junior Varsity Club.

    Thanks for the comments! Good call Mel.

    I’m not sure I get the Jr. Varsity club comment. I don’t think 2nd place with 3 games in hand is the work of a Jr. Varsity team.

    I kind of agree with the new stadium comment, but I kind of don’t. Most people who say that are typically Galaxy fans. The way I look at it, if it makes for more teams in MLS, I would perfer to have every stadium support two clubs.

    I don’t think Chivas USA is shooting for the WASP group. I think there are a bunch of 2nd or 3rd generation hispanics that don’t speak spanish, or those who like the latin style of football that want to see a good game. That is where I see the team targeting.

    CHANGE THE TEAM NAME

    CHIVAS USA to CHIVAS LA or FC CHIVAS LA or LA CHIVAS or something Los Angeles . . ..

    Well, I don’t know for sure, but there is a theory that the Galaxy would not allow another “LA” team. I would too like to see committment to the LA area.

    Oop - I meant players instead of payers… although I guess Chivas need payers too.

    I don’t think changing the Chivas name or even the USA part is neccesary (unless Chivas create a second MLS team). Its a shame their previous marketing campaign pigeonholed them. I don’t know what they should focus on now marketing-wise but I do hope that whatever management dynamic exists that allows the players to thrive so well on the field doesn’t get destroyed.

    As to the JV comment…. the Chivas Org. as a whole has treated the Chivas USA as a feeder to the parent club, and the fans have taken the cue from them. Only, a few die-hards are coming out to watch. The same for any other ‘reserve’ team in the league. IMHO.
