Update on California Kangaroo Skin Import Bill; The Battle is Heating Up
By: David | June 1st, 2007What started off as an innocent struggle to kill and skin kangaroos for the feet of soccer players, is turning into a worldwide nightmare of US v. Australia. It would seem that this moral issue is more then just a battle over what is right and ethical, but rather what is good for Australia.
After doing a little bit of thinking and searching on the internet, it would seem that more people are against this than I had earlier thought, but at the same time there is a growing sentiment of Australians who like kangaroo skins.
From perthnow news in Australia, one reader was quoted as stating,
The leather is superb for football boots. Aussis have been using roo leather for over 100 yearsfor boots and shoes. As for cruelty towards the animals,i think some people are stiil living in the dark ages.AMERICANS SHOULD’NT BE TELLING US WHAT TO DO . THE AMERCIAN BISON HAS BEEN ALMOST BEEN HUNTED OUT OF EXISTENCE. LEAVE US ALONE AND BUY THE LEATHER
That comment was in direct response to another reader who was disgusted with the use of kangaroo skins,
Mr Malcolm Turnbull’s lack of concern that our unique wildlife is being killed for soccer shoes is totally chilling and calculated. Animals only get a mention in our halls of power once they become endangered, and even then only tokenism is given to their survival. It’s all for the shooters until then! These poor animals are terrorised by lights and guns, and mainly females with young are now targetted. There are many horrifically injured animals in the process, and joeys are just dispatched as having no value. These precious animals are just considered a “plague” and little more than vermin in their own country. Shame on Australia.
Oddly enough, both of the readers are not from Australia. As for the bill itself, SB 880, it passed through Senate the other day with a vote of 27-8 after Adidas had spent $435,693 in lobbying fees (latimes.com).
More to come, as information becomes more accessible.

Interesting, David. I didn’t know this controversy had been brewing in CA. As a long-time fan of the Adidas Copa Mundials (with K-Leather), I’ll have to keep an eye on this.
