Who is that new Guy???? And what is he doing here!?!?

By: David | March 28th, 2007

The name is David and I come to you as the newest addition to the Offside blogpin. It has been quite an experience witnessing the growth of the soccer blogging community and the potential it has to impact the growth of the sport. Alone we only have a small soapbox from which to shout ideals to the people, but together we can make a movement. With more and more people moving towards the internet, and the fact that the internet has empowered the people, it gives us a chance to help….

Wait, this was supposed to be an intro page

So let’s get on with the good stuff. My name is David, and I am currently in my last year of college. As my little bio says, I worked with Chivas as an intern about two years ago and it was an eye opening experience. Prior to that, I was like most Americans, in that I hated soccer. It was just a boring sport that was forced upon as kids, kind of a rite of passage. In high school I got into a verbal shouting match with soccer player as to why soccer was a waste of time.

But alas I have atoned for my sins, and have been bitten by the soccer bug, especially for ChivasUSA. A team that has such a great connection to soccer history and fans that are, true fans bring me to tears of joy (well figuratively, but I still get a warm fuzzy feeling inside). Thus I have been invited to write for the Offside as a blogger on Chivas USA.

I look forward to many interesting discussions and debates. And maybe I can help convert a few people to become Chivas fans.

That is all.

David.

Greetings from the Man Yoo and Cola sides - good luck! Managed to be in LA for a Chivas match last season and had a great time. It really felt like a Mexican league side playing in the US. Look forward to learning more about the culture of the club.

Welcome aboard, the choo-choo train. I do the Columbus blog and, given the dearth of information on that team, I’m starting to think I volunteered (yes…that’s the part that stings) for the short straw.

And, for what it’s worth, I think there’s real upside in prefering other sports to soccer growing up (though I’m a soccer-loving lifer personally). You can’t convert the heathen if you don’t speak their language. Just ask that poor Jehovah’s Witness I talked to for an hour…

Just out of curiosity… are you a Chivas de Guadalajara fan as well? And if so was this before or after you became a Chivas USA fan? :)

Great question! Back in the day (well 2 or so years ago) I started to follow soccer. This was prior to my interning with ChivasUSA. It was more at the prodding of my dad and some people that I knew, that I began to take an interest in soccer. So I started to do some research and follow the sport; I still was kind of hesitant as old habit of hating the sport still existed. Well once I had heard that a major international owner (Vergara) was planning on putting a team into the MLS I started to take an interest, especially where I could not stand the OTHER team in LA. I started to follow Chivas (Guadalajara), intrigued by its history and what it stood for.

Long story short, I ended up at a career fair and the only booth that was receptive to me were two guys from the Chivas FO. I gave them my resume, and before I knew it I was an Intern with Chivas.

So basically to answer your question I became a fan of both Guadalajara and ChivasUSA at the same time. I feel that being a fan of ChivasUSA I have connection to the team in Guadalajara and as such, I am of that team too. Like I said I love its rich history, what it stands for and the fans. The fans rival any other team I have come in contact with.

I know that was a bit long, and I hope I answered you question.

Jeff: I know what you mean, try convincing a guy who wanted to rename all of the sports because they did not conform to soccer. It was fun.

Belonging to a family that is composed of pure Chivas fan I can tell you first hand that we are one crazy crowd… if you were to stand outside my house during the classico you would think that we were having a full fledged frat party only to enter and discover that it is a family of 4 plus 2 or 3 uncles!!!! I was raised to be a chivista de corazon y hasta la muerte which probably explains my fathers dissapointment in me when I became a Galaxy fan!!! LoL So while I am a HUGE Chivas fan, I havent quite adopted Chivas USA yet… to me they are what the Angels were to the Dodgers back in the day :) p.s. That is so cool that you got that internship I would kill for an internship with an MLS team

Well lets hope we can change that, if Chivas USA does what they are supposed to this season, they will prove themselves to be more then just the “Angeles” of soccer. :)
